Akram Khan: Thikra - Night of Remembering
Thikra - Night of Remembering
Running time: The performance lasts approximately 1 hour.
As I stand humbled within the vastness of this epic desert known as AlUla, I feel the urge to unearth the many cultures that have passed through here.
Akram Khan
With striking visual direction from award-winning visual artist Manal AlDowayan, Khan and his artistic team once more take a deep dive into the mythological and ritual layers of the desert landscape of Wadi AlFann, in AlUla, and its inhabitants in order to propitiate past, present and future. On stage: a brilliant cast of female dancers who, with Bharatanatyam as well as Western contemporary dance, merge hybrid cultures, traditions and perspectives. In the brand new piece by Akram Khan, a concern for life on Earth is once again coupled with a gripping firework of dance, music and visuals.
Akram Khan is one of the most influential contemporary choreographers and dancers, known for his unique fusion of classical Indian kathak dance and contemporary dance. He evolved his artistic style through a balanced approach to Eastern and Western dance traditions – a method that has grown to become the hallmark of his work. In 2000, he founded the Akram Khan Company, whose innovative performances explore themes of identity, migration, time and memory. Khan collaborates with cutting-edge artists from a variety of disciplines – from dancers (Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui) and musicians (Nitin Sawhney) to visual artists. His style is characterised by mathematically complex rhythmic footwork, fluid movement and emotional intensity.
