The challenge, with a really big capital C, is how to programme seven Magnificent season series projects in a way that offers the audiences a clear, fresh, playful and, above all, top-quality insight into new developments on the international and, consequently, national performing arts scene. This scene is indeed highly prolific and vibrant, charged with tremendous creative potential regardless of the genre, artform or style.

The view that Cankarjev dom is the hallmark of quality, while being Slovenia’s main cultural centre, is widely acknowledged. Finding a cross-section that will appeal to both the connoisseurs of theatre and the broader public, while catering for both sides, is the main aim of this programme and the greatest responsibility of the team behind it. We are confident that forthcoming season's programme satisfies these criteria.
We are hosting one of the oldest and most distinguished theatre companies, the Comédie-Française, with a production directed by Tiago Rodrigues, European theatre celebrity and director of the prestigious Festival d’Avignon, followed by a project by the master of British contemporary dance, Wayne McGregor. Another eminent name is Spanish choreographer Jesús Rubio Gamo, whose cast of dancers brings together En-Knap and the Zagreb Dance Ensemble. Cheek by Jowl is led by legendary director Declan Donnellan and set designer Nick Ormerod: over a career spanning four decades, the two artists have won virtually all major theatre awards across the globe. Their interpretation of Hamlet will explain the reasons why. In addition to choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, who is making a return visit, we take great pride in hosting the Malandain Ballet Biarritz.

If Sydney Dance Company’s first visit to Slovenia was a pleasant surprise, this time – with Twofold – the troupe will have the honour of presenting the closing show of our international programme.
