Arne Hodalič Dialogues: Eye, Voice, Thought
Series of talks
For almost half a century, Arne Hodalič has been one of Slovenia’s most distinguished photojournalists. Travelling the world with his camera, he has journeyed through and sailed across nearly one hundred countries on every continent, with his photo essays and reports published in many of the world’s leading newspapers and magazines. For several years, he served as photography editor of the Slovenian edition of National Geographic and lectured at three universities. The central focus of his photographic work is almost always people. He is drawn to stories about individuals most of us will never encounter – from marginalised people to some of the world’s wealthiest figures, from passionate explorers and underwater archaeologists to elusive adventurers. Their stories reveal the extraordinary diversity of our world. Arne Hodalič is not only a master visual storyteller, but also an exceptional narrator. He brings important social issues to the forefront, often shedding light on precisely those concerns society prefers to overlook or sweep under the carpet. He is inspired by adventure and by people passionately devoted to their work – much like himself.
Arne Hodalič’s Dialogues: Eye, Voice, Thought – a diverse series of talks featuring compelling guests – filled our halls to capacity throughout the 2026 season, and we are delighted to announce that the series will continue in 2027. Through Hodalič’s photographs, stories, and, not least, his questions and reflections, audiences have already journeyed to the worlds of the Incas and the Maya with Dr Ivan Šprajc, ventured into the jungles of mystical Papua New Guinea with Dr Borut Telban, and, together with Erik Valenčič, uncovered the background to the forgotten conflict in Western Sahara while learning about the lives of people caught between politics and years of uncertainty – to name just a few examples.
In the new series of talks with selected guests, Arne will once again present photographs from his most fascinating journeys and research expeditions, illuminating individual topics from scientific and professional perspectives alongside distinguished researchers and experts.
Together with mountaineer Viki Grošelj, we will venture into the heart of the Himalayas and discover stories of perseverance, courage, and life among the world’s highest peaks. Biologist and diver Dr Tom Turk will take us beneath the ocean’s surface, where we will confront one of today’s greatest environmental threats – plastic pollution in the oceans – and reflect on the future of the Adriatic and the world’s seas. Through the personal experience of Tina Zorman, who started a family in Yemen, we will come to know the country and its people through the lens of war and political upheaval. Tomaž Lavrenčič, Director of ITF Enhancing Human Security, will shed light on the background to humanitarian demining around the world and explain how the removal of deadly remnants of war is transforming the lives of communities across different continents. Together with anthropologist Dr Ana Jelnikar, we will journey to India – a land of extraordinary cultural richness, striking contrasts, and social extremes. Archaeologist Dr Andrej Gaspari, long-time head of underwater archaeological research in Slovenia, will reveal surprising stories and remarkable finds hidden for decades beneath the waters of the Ljubljanica River.
The events will be interspersed with performances by young musicians, bringing energy and freshness to the evening’s distinctive atmosphere.
