Earth Day, celebrated on 22 April for more than half a century, is taking place this year under the slogan “Our Power, Our Planet” – a rallying call for people everywhere to reclaim their voice, their rights, and their future.
More than one billion people around the globe celebrate Earth Day. Each year, the theme changes in response to current environmental challenges and concerns. The day is dedicated to advocating for the health of the planet – for clean air, seas and oceans, soil, ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. Earth Day reminds us that there is still time to protect the planet, that we can choose a sustainable and successful future, and that we can restore nature and build a healthy world for future generations.
World Environment Day 2026
World Environment Day 2026 will rally the world around the urgency of climate action. With rising temperatures, collapsing ecosystems, and disruptive weather extremes, humanity stands at a tipping point. But we are not powerless.
The 2026 theme underscores that climate action is not just about reducing carbon emissions—it is about rethinking the systems that power our economies and repairing our relationship with the climate. By doing so, we can secure a safer, healthier, and more just future for all.
“All those years ago, in 1970, we were ridiculously confident that we were going to win. We launched a genuine environmental revolution. We proved that an engaged public can be an unstoppable force. It can be again in 2026.”
Denis Hayes, Organizer of the First Earth Day and Board Chair Emeritus, EARTHDAY.ORG
Earth Day Facts You Probably Didn’t Know
• Earth Day is the largest secular civic event in the world.
• It inspired the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act. That’s a solid legacy.
• The name “Earth Day” was almost “Environmental Teach-In.” Not exactly slogan material.
• More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year. That’s roughly one in eight humans on Earth.
• Some countries observe Earth Day on the spring equinox, but April 22 is globally recognized as the main event.
We will celebrate Earth Day 2026 at Cankarjev dom on 19 and 20 April 2026
On Sunday, 19 April, at 19.00, the film Agatha’s Almanac will be screened in Kosovel Hall. The screening will be followed by a Q&A.
On Monday, 20 April, at 12.00, we will exchange seedlings and distribute 1,000 litres of compost – donated by the public utility company VO-KA – in the Council of Europe Park. At 13.00, Dr. Blanka Ravnjak, a researcher at the University Botanic Gardens Ljubljana, will give a presentation on tree species in the Council of Europe Park.
At 17.00, a tour of CD beehives will be conducted by the beekeeper Franc Petrovčič.
With sustainability in mind, we believe that even small steps can help us achieve important shared goals, which is why Cankarjev dom is joining the Earth Day celebrations with the following programme:

At 19.00
Agatha's Almanac
Canada, 2025, 86’
Documentary film
90-year-old Agatha forges a solitary existence on her ancestral farm, preserving heirloom seeds in her handmade universe. Practical and esoteric, her actions predate modern conveniences. Without a driver’s license, cell phone, running water, or even a functioning landline Agatha’s daily rituals form a vivid counterpoint to modern life.
Directed by: Amalie Atkins
The screening will be followed by a Q&A.
