Self-made women – builders of cultural space
Female artists intertwine the threads of invisible worlds, and whilst not wielding hammers and picks and producing work that would materialize in the form of massive constructions, they are the builders of cultural community. Culture constitutes a binding agent without which we would not exist as a community, yet female artists are denied this role. The lives of female artists tend to be fraught with challenge, sacrifice and social disregard, but they continue to tread their chosen path only because they are wildflowers – independent and unconventional women.
The winner of the 2023 MIRA Award will be announced soon. The nominees, whose work and commitment vividly embody the inimitable spirit of Mira Mihelič, the first president of PEN, are Anja Mugerli, Jerneja Jezernik, Dušanka Zabukovec, Mirana Likar Bajželj and Vilma Purič.
