Arriving in good time
During the festive season in December, traffic tends to get heavily congested in Ljubljana. Visitors are advised to leave home earlier than usual to avoid arriving late.
Scottish smallpipes player Brìghde Chaimbeul burst onto the scene in 2019 with The Reeling, a debut album that got the experimentalists talking and earned rave reviews from pretty much everywhere. A native Gaelic speaker and devotee of the drone, Brìghde (pronounced ‘Breetch-er’) mixes original compositions and songs inspired by Gaelic folklore and archive recordings to startling effect, drawing on piping traditions beyond her native Scotland, including those of Cape Breton, Eastern Europe and Ireland. Her second album, Carry Them With Us, which came out last year on (where else but) Glitterbeat, appears to have cemented her place as one of the most thrilling experimental musicians around, all at the age of 26. English folk-rock legend Richard Thompson recently listed it as one of his top 5 albums of all time – high praise indeed.
