Arriving in good time
During the festive season in December, traffic tends to get heavily congested in Ljubljana. Visitors are advised to leave home earlier than usual to avoid arriving late.
Niko Novak, one of today’s most prominent Slovenian singer-songwriters known for his signature deep voice, has been narrating similar tales on the electric bass. The prolific artist has been annually regaling us with a new release, a unique voyage into the deepest recesses of the soul and how it reveals itself in intimate human relationships. His 2023 release, Ambition to Help is a Killer, was produced by Chris Eckman, and high on his agenda for 2024 is a January trip to London to work on his seventh solo album with producer Jim Jones. This latest album should come out on the very day of the Cankarjevi torki concert.
The German musician of Kosovar descent, Ibadet Ramadani has released a surprising debut. Ten years after her band Super700 – an indie-pop idol – disbanded, Ibadet went to the woods with her guitar. All by herself in a cottage she tried to ascertain whether music could obtain new life by rising from the fertile ashes of life – and if so, what kind. Suddenly, she was surrounded by songs. Meticulously orchestrated songs about parting, love, hope and pain. Songs stemming from her personal experiences, some of them cathartic. But Ibadet does not only centre on herself. The solo debut album is both a tribute to her family and an intimate songbook about human condition. An album about things that seem strangely familiar to us, but are universal in nature.
