Yejin Yu, geomungo; Jiyeon Kim, gayageum; Jaein Hwang, haegeum
Maegandang literally means a group of people who enchant the audience. The South Korean trio comes with a repertoire of original music played by musicians Yejin Yu, Jiyeon Kim and Jaein Hwang on traditional silk-stringed Korean instruments, haegeum, gayageum and geomungo. Sometimes their musical performances are accompanied by ethereal projections that draw shadows across the stage like phantasms of the past.
The trio most imaginatively invite the audience on a journey into the mysterious and deep traditional music of Korea, while constantly testing the boundaries of tradition. What's more, Maegandang seek to revive, refresh and expand the ancient codes of music-making, ushering the old into a modern, globalised era.
Upon debuting in 2022, Maegandang won major awards at the most important competitions on Korea's traditional music scene and performed as South Korea's representative at the recent Womex Festival in Manchester last year. Maegandang are making their Slovenian debut in Cankarjev dom’s Linhart Hall.
