NEW MUSIC FORUM 2026 at Cankarjev dom: Composing Alterity

Since its establishment in 2019, the UHO Association has become an important force in the development of contemporary music in Slovenia. The 2026 edition of the Forum of New Music festival (5–11 November) places composers Misato Mochizuki and Aurélien Dumont at its centre. Together, they have articulated a question that lies at the heart of this year’s programme: “How can we create a shared space that is not founded on uniformity, but on the richness of our differences?”

This year’s festival turns its attention to the Other and the Different. It opens up new horizons, crosses boundaries and invites us to listen to what is unfamiliar and unexpected. Yet this openness does not mean relinquishing our own identities or allowing them to dissolve into an undifferentiated whole. Rather, it is about placing them in dialogue with difference — allowing them to evolve, to enter into new relationships, and to be enriched by what lies beyond the familiar.
