Iskrive karte / Težko je ne risati satire (Illustrious Cards / One Simply Must Draw a Satire)

An evening offering insight into the longstanding career of academic painter, illustrator and comic artist Ciril Horjak (winner of the 2024 Prešeren Fund Award), especially his monograph Težko je ne risati satire (One Simply Must Draw a Satire), an overview of his illustration and comics oeuvre – from newspaper satire to book covers, as well as his Iskrive karte (Illustrious Cards), a deck of playing cards that pay tribute to the creativity of prominent Slovenian men and women. 

The publication of the monograph coincided with Ciril Horjak's retrospective exhibition at the Prešeren Prize Winners' Gallery in February and March 2025.The deck of playing cards features 18 illustrious Slovenian men and women who have made a lasting imprint on our cultural and social space, depicted by Ciril Horjak in his characteristic drawing style. The Iskrive karte project was developed on the initiative of Marko Arnež and Polona Hafner Ferlan from the Šolski center Kranj. The project was accompanied by the publication of the bilingual book Iskrive Slovenke in Slovenci (Illustrious Slovenian Women and Men), which includes 17 essays by just as many authors presenting prominent figures from various professional and personal perspectives. The accompanying illustrations serve to enrich the essays, turning them into in-depth stories about the values, ideas and times in which these personalities lived and worked.
