An indispensable part of Swiss musical life, the Basel Symphony Orchestra is the heir to a tradition that goes back more than 300 years. The celebrated Markus Poschner, recipient of the Austrian distinction Conductor of the Year 2020 and multiple winner of the prestigious International Classical Music Award (ICMA; 2019, 2024, 2025), will take the reins of this large ensemble as its Chief Conductor in the coming season. The Sinfonieorchester Basel has a large recording catalogue, and also runs its own label. Under the baton of the illustrious maestro, we look forward to the Ljubljana debut of the phenomenal, dynamic young violinist Maria Ioudenitch poised on the cusp of a major international career. In 2021, she received first prizes in the Ysaye International Music Competition, the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition, and the Joseph Joachim International Competition.
The late Romantic programme juxtaposes two late-nineteenth century giants: Dvořák's much-loved piece, arguably the greatest concerto ever composed – famed for its tunefulness, the spirit of Czech dance idiom, drama, and opportunities for plenty of virtuosic display, provides a subtle counterpoise to Tchaikovsky’s emotionally charged and deeply confessional final symphony.
