Programme:
George F. Handel. Ariodante, opera in two acts, HWV 33, concert performance
Handel's formidable opéra comique Ariodante, a tale of treachery and intrigue, features a rich array of intense emotions and mental states expressed in soulful arias. Melodiousness and virtuosity, bravura and unrelenting drama provide a magnificent backdrop for displaying the technical and interpretative qualities of an international cast of acclaimed singers with superstar Franco Fagioli, the first countertenor to have signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, in the leading role.
A genuine 17th-century Baroque atmosphere creates the perfect musical setting for the stylistically informed, technically impeccable and artistically enthusiastic Il Pomo d'Oro: winner of the 2020 Gramophone Opera Award for a recording of Handel’s Agrippina and ambassador of El Sistema Greece, a humanitarian project providing free music education. This time, the ensemble is performing under the baton of Baroque specialist George Petrou, the new Artistic Director of the International Handel Festival at Göttingen.
Il Pomo d’Oro is proving to be one of the most brilliant ensembles on the early music stage today. BBC Music Magazine
George Petrou conducted this lavish masterpiece with a strong sense of drama, appropriately highlighting the recitatives while keeping the action at an impressively homogeneous pace. Bachtrack
