(*first performance, dedicated to J. Cerkovnik)
Jure Cerkovnik (Slovenia, 1990) is a young Slovenian classical guitarist. He graduated in 2013 from Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna (Austria), where he studied under Prof. Alvaro Pierri. After earning a Master’s in 2015, he proceeded with his second Master’s at Hochschule der Künste in Zürich in the class of Prof. Anders Miolin. Since 2016 he has worked as an assistant at the same academy.
Jure has taken part in many national and international music competitions and won altogether 17 prizes (first, second and special).
He has performed throughout Europe and Asia, in Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia. In 2018 and 2019 he was on a tour of Asia (Japan and Taiwan). He participates in various festivals, including Forum Wien, Zagreb Guitar Festival, Zurich Guitar Days, Lucerne Guitar Festival, Vienna Guitar Festival, Postojna Guitar Week, Sarajevo International Guitar Festival, Acerra Guitar Meeting, where he regularly teaches masterclasses and/or performs concerts. In February 2017 he held a solo debut in the renowned Konzerthaus in Vienna. Jure has also performed at venues that include Arnold Schoenberg Centre Wien, Ehrbar Saal in Vienna, National Theatre in Sarajevo, the Slovenian Philharmonic and Werdenberg Castle.
Music critics on several occasions have recognized the quality and value of his performances, one of them describing him as follows: “Cerkovnik showed that, although still young, he is capable of creating a profound, narrative interpretation of classical music inwrought with multitude of various emotions.” (Tomaž Gržeta, MMC)
Jure has also performed as a soloist with several orchestras, including the Symphonic Orchestra Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic), Symphonic Orchestra Simfonika from Vrhnika (Slovenia), and the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra. Recently, he has recorded his first CD, Palettes, which was released in December 2017 under the Baros Records label featuring works of Ponce, Ourkouzounov, Rebay and Bogdanović.
His guitar repertoire is very diverse. He performs classical works spanning periods that range from renaissance and baroque up to the modern twentieth-century music, Spanish and Slovenian music. At the moment his repertoire also features music of the Balkan composers, which is very interesting in terms of rhythm and characteristics, as well as chamber music in different formations.
