The end of the subscription series will be marked by Haydn’s One Hundred and Third and Brahms’s Fourth. The latter is the work of an extremely self-critical and disciplined artist. In this symphony, musical form and content merge, as compositional technique opens up ever new ways of expressing the composer’s deepest beliefs about everything unnamed that shapes our destiny. A symphony that, like life, ends before we know it.
