Home, orphanage, hole, madhouse, institution... One of the women who live next door said we are well provided for because we live in a mansion. Yes, a mansion. That's great, but I don't think this woman really believes we're okay. It's like when I tell Dario how great it is that he attends school, but then he gets an F at that school, which puts him in a bad mood.
Domaši (Home Dwellers) provides an inside look at life in a so-called institutionalized care. It is a powerful, emotional and occasionally funny story about institutionalized children living without their parents until they reach maturity. Partly unveiling the ossified, rigid bureaucratic system, the play foregrounds the children’s personal stories, tales of coming-of-age, friendship, first love, testing the limits – and self-searching. The confessional monologues offer a touching and intimate insight into a childhood that can never be carefree, looking through the eyes of children well familiar with the relationships in this environment, with the rules governing their lives.
…You leave this hole when you turn 18. Unless you go to college, then you live in a home flat. My brother Dario will stay here for another ten years. After which I have two more, and then we'll both be independent. I find that really funny. Your birthday’s at midnight, you turn 18, you get your papers, pack your things, and start leading an independent life. So, you go to bed as an institutionalized child and wake up on the outside like a former home dweller.
The play Domaši earned Croatian playwright and actress Ana Marija Veselčić the 2019 Croatian Theatre Award. The live radio play is the first staging of this text in Slovenia.
