Forms of Musical Memory

As a vehicle of cultural memory, music sustains the preservation of language, ritual customs and community experiences, with each new generation adding its own voice to this legacy. This creative arc between tradition and contemporary expression is the theme of this year’s World Music series. The programme features musicians who have shaped their artistic expression at the crossroads of cultures, often beyond the mainstream of the European canon – from Réunion in the Indian Ocean to the Beskid Mountains, from Uzbekistan to Portugal, and from Iran, Greece and France to Kenya. Each concert reveals a unique way in which musical traditions remain alive – through respect for, interpretation of and engagement with cultural heritage.

The Polish string quintet Vołosi draws on the legacy of Beskid folk musicians, whose rich sonic textures emerged through the very act of music-making. Building on this heritage, their original music is defined by improvisation, spontaneous interplay and exceptional string virtuosity. The family ensemble Votia from the island of Réunion continues the tradition of maloya, the music of enslaved plantation workers, bringing to life the collective experience of their people under French colonial rule. Using traditional instruments, Ensemble Chakâm explores the sonic territory between Persian, Greek and European Baroque music, imbuing it with new meanings through the prism of diaspora.

The singer Gulzoda unfolds the world of Uzbek vocal tradition, using poetry and song as vessels of historical, linguistic and artistic heritage. Carminho’s interpretation of fado manifests an exceptional feel for words, phrasing and silence, investing Portugal’s musical heritage with contemporary resonance. For Kenyan percussionist Kasiva Mutua, rhythm is the foundation of musical organisation; her playing reveals the richness of East African percussion practices and their creative potential within contemporary composition.

As many as five concerts in this programme are led by exceptional female artists who, through their determination and artistic excellence, are writing a new chapter in the story of music. Each concert offers its own answer to the question of how music can remain true to its origins while speaking to the present.

The number of subscription tickets is limited.
Subscriptions may be purchased until the first event of the season series. Please note that between 20 July and 23 August, subscriptions are available exclusively online or via email orders at vstopnice@cd-cc.si.

Cankarjev dom reserves the right to make changes to the advertised programme and/or performers. Subscribers will be informed of any such changes. Please check our website regularly for updates. We intend to deliver all announced concerts as scheduled. Should any concert be postponed, every effort will be made to arrange an alternative date. If a subscriber is unable to attend the rescheduled performance, or if Cankarjev dom is unable to provide a replacement date, the subscriber will be entitled either to a value card in an amount proportionate to the subscription price or to a refund of the corresponding purchase price.
