Arriving in good time
During the festive season in December, traffic tends to get heavily congested in Ljubljana. Visitors are advised to leave home earlier than usual to avoid arriving late.
Lucia Cadotsch, voice; Jozef Dumoulin, piano; Phil Dunkin, double bass; Leif Berger, drums
Accomplished Swiss musician and singer-songwriter Lucia Cadotsch is making a return visit to Ljubljana, where she has already presented the projects Schneeweiss + Rosenrot and Speak Low. The critically acclaimed Speak Low toured all major music venues and prestigious international festivals, including the Jazz Festival Ljubljana. With AKI, Cadotsch is navigating new musical terrain and notching up yet another success. The songs blend Cadotsch’s idiosyncratic wordplay and imagery and the pianist’s rich, layered soundscapes. The idea to add a rhythm section was born out of the desire to expand the sonic possibilities of the group and to inject the music with new perspectives.
Lucia Cadotsch’s singing parallels that of the mature Nina Simone – not that they sound alike, but both offer an honest, eye-to-eye conversation. Their intelligent, disciplined approach serves the song rather than pandering to an audience. Both avoid showy virtuosity and over-singing, which soon becomes tiring. Instead, their close readings stand up to repeated listens, revealing new depths in the songs.
