The Philharmonic Classics subscription series opens with Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Haydn, whose theme was later discovered not to have actually been composed by Haydn. This is followed by Mozart’s Symphonia Concertante for oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon, which may not, in fact, have been composed by Mozart. Despite the doubts about their authenticity, both of these playful compositions are still frequently performed today. On this occasion, they will serve as an introduction to the moving Requiem, the last work that Schumann managed to complete before his tragic death.
