Arriving in good time
During the festive season in December, traffic tends to get heavily congested in Ljubljana. Visitors are advised to leave home earlier than usual to avoid arriving late.
Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra
Conductor: Charles Dutoit
Programme:
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21
Hector Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14
The originator of programme music, Hector Berlioz, best described his relationship to Beethoven’s music in a letter to his friend August Morel, where he writes: “As far as symphonies are concerned, Mozart wrote seventeen, of which three are beautiful and even then… The good Haydn produced a quantity of pretty things of that kind. Beethoven wrote seven masterpieces, but Beethoven is not human. And when you are only a human being you should not pass judgement on the God.” The consequences of the creation of both symphonies, Beethoven’s first and Berlioz’s only, were unimaginable.
